At ROOTS, we use every day to make a difference in the lives of homeless youth. The biggest impact is made by our overnight volunteers, who are crucial in this effort.

Overnight volunteers stay the night at our shelter along with our guests. This shift starts at 7pm and ends at 8:30am the following morning. On Fridays the shift is from 7pm to 9:30 am. Volunteers work directly with our staff to help ensure the emotional and physical safety of the space. Overnight shifts are broken up into four 2-hour awake shifts. Overnight Volunteers are asked to remain awake for one of these 2-hour shifts, and will sleep for 6 hours. Bedding is provided. During the awake shift, overnight Volunteers are responsible for assisting in walk-arounds of the room every 10 minutes, being available for guests who require emergency assistance, and completing guest laundry. We ask that Overnight Volunteers commit to one shift per week; dinner and breakfast are provided. All overnight volunteers are supported by shelter staff, in case there are any questions or concerns during your shift.
